Skydiving

June 14, 1997

In the summer of 1997, I took a trip to Umatilla, Florida to give skydiving a try. They recommended I jump tandem since it was my first time, and they paired me with an instructor named Michael Costello. I did not have as much of a rush as I expected, but I still enjoyed it. Shortly after my jump, there was an article in the paper about the instructor. He was on another tandem jump with a skydiving student like me, and the parachutes (the main and the reserve) did not deploy properly resulting in Costello's death. His student, however, miraculously survived, with much of the credit given to the instructor.

These are the photos taken for me during my skydiving trip. I have also included a newspaper article about the instructor that my mother found a few short weeks after my jump. Hopefully the scan is still readable.
